Biomedical Engineering

A tough career option combining two streams, Biology and Engineering.

Introduction:

A Biomedical engineer's job is to analyse and design solutions to problems in Biology and Medicine, with the goal of improving the effectiveness and quality of patient care.  Bioengineering, is the application of engineering principles to the fields of health care and biology. Biomedical engineers work with researchers and doctors to develop systems, equipment and devices in order to solve clinical problems. Biomedical engineering is the application of the principles and problem-solving techniques of engineering to Biology and Medicine. This is used throughout healthcare, from analysis and diagnosis to treatment and recovery. Biomedical engineering differs from other engineering disciplines because it has an influence on human health in which engineers apply and use an intimate knowledge of modern biological principles.

Job profile:

Biomedical engineers can seek employment in various industries such as hospitals, medical institutions, manufacturing units, medical equipment, government agencies and pharmaceuticals. Biomedical engineers develop modified devices and provide advice for maintaining and handling medical equipments. There are ample opportunities for  engineers in the field of research and development at research institutes, government agencies & universities. Bioengineering combines the two major disciplines of Biology and Engineering. Bioengineers have a wide variety of career choices.

Some graduates may work alongside medical practitioners, developing new medical techniques, medical devices, and instrumentation for manufacturing companies.  Many bioengineering professionals seek to help people by solving complex problems in healthcare and medicine. Some bioengineering jobs combine several disciplines, requiring a lot of skills.

Salary:
Biomedical engineering is one of the most highly rewarding fields. A beginner's initial salary is around Rs 10,000-15,000 every month which they can earn by working in hospitals and health care centres. Graduates engaged in research activities and the teaching line can get an income between Rs 15,000-20,000 per month.

Engineers working in the government sector can earn around Rs 20,000-25,000 per month. Biomedical engineers working in medical equipment production firms can earn around Rs 20,000-30,000 every month at the beginning stage. The salary keeps on increasing with time and experience.
