Genetic Engineering is concerned with deliberate manipulation of the genetic material (DNA) of a living organism by artificial methods. The work involves extracting the DNA out of one organism, changing it using chemicals or radiation and subsequently putting it back into the same or a different organism. The specializations in Genetic Engineering are related to plants, animals and human beings. Genetic Engineering is also concerned with developing hybrid varieties of plants, making plants disease resistant. This engineering techniques is used in research, biotechnology, and medicine.
This branch is still in the process of development in our country. In India, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries offer the best opportunities to genetic engineers and professionals with handsome salaries. Some Genetic engineers also work in government laboratories and research centres. There is immense scope for such professionals abroad as well.
